59% Say Sarah Palin Isn't Presidential Material -- What Are the Other 41% Thinking?

Did you see the recent poll where 59% of Americans believe Sarah Palin lacks the "ability to be an effective president." You can tell from the Sarah Palin World Map that she is still not ready for prime-time!

It is uplifting to see that only 26% of the adults polled thought that Mama Grizzly would have the ability to be effective. The number dropped to 21% when asked of independents. Not surprisingly, there are many more -- 47% -- of the Republicans in the poll who thought that Mama Grizzly had the right stuff to be our Commander-in-Chief.

We've all seen Sarah Palin on the national stage in the past two years. Can anyone seriously believe that she would be a credible leader of the free world?

Does Sarah Palin even know a Black person? You never see anyone of African descent in her videos or at her speeches. I remember that the Blacks folks in Alaska didn't think highly of her when she was running for Vice President. What's changed over the past two years?

Succes 2010: Norah Jones

Tune In Tuesday: Jasiri X Shares "Dr. King's Nightmare"

I suspect that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was giving the side-eye to his neice, Sarah 'Mama Grizzly' and Glenn 'Elmer Gantry' Beck this past weekend. Young rapper (Jasiri X) shared his vision of what Dr. King would say if he was still speaking to us:

Good News Tuesday: Joseph Huggins, Jr. -- Future Face of Technology

Joseph Huggins Jr. graduated from high school earlier this year. He made the decision to accept a commission with the US Navy. He left on July 27th for the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, Rhode Island. There he will receive 10 months of extra academic and military training before being transferred to the Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Joseph earned Bemley Scholarships from BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) for his performance in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 national High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championships.

Joseph was kind enough to share his thoughts on the HSCC program with us:

The day I first became a member of BDPA seems like ages ago, although it has only been five years since I first joined this program that has changed my life forever. My first year competing with the BDPA Chicago Chapter in the HSCC, I believe, was my best year. The year was 2006 and I remember walking to into a classroom and feeling intimidated by the amazing talent that surrounded me. Being only in 8th grade, I was one of the youngest students and was very shy. I knew I had my work cut out for me.

Surprisingly, the competition seemed to fade away as if it just disappeared into thin air. Somehow, after the long months of training, I found myself among the top five students selected to compete at the national conference. The Chicago Chapter took first place that year. I can remember the feeling I had that night as we were announced the first place champions of the BDPA National High School Computer Competition. Winning the national competition was one the greatest accomplishments of my life.

After my experience with BDPA in 2006, I decided to stick around and work hard in order to compete in the HSCC for the rest of my high school career. In the following three years I made the team and the Chicago Chapter placed in the top three winning teams two years in a row. I am not able to compete in the HSCC this year in 2010 due to my obligations to U.S. Navy. I have been accepted to the United States Naval Academy where I will study computer engineering and upon graduation will be a commissioned officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps.

I would like to give thanks to the BDPA Foundation for expanding my knowledge of information technology and exposing me to the many great and amazing people I have met over the years. I would like to give special thanks to the people like Gibran McDuffie, Pamela Norfleet, Bryan Moore, Yvette Graham, and the host of other BDPA members and volunteers that have helped to shape me into the young man that I am today.

Joe is a remarkable young man. Whenever you hear a BDPAer talking about our work in advancing careers from 'the classroom to the boardroom' you would do well to remember Joe as an example of  the classroom'!   You can celebrate Joe's story best with a secure online donation to the Bemley Scholarship Fund so that we can help more young squires in the future.

Florida Racist Gets 10-Year Sentence for Hate Crime Against Nekedia Cato

It is nice to see the criminal justice system working in favor of the Black community. This blog told you about Thomas Cosby a couple of years ago. He is the white racist who ran his car into (then) 25-year old Nekedia Cato while she was riding her bicycle. Cosby was heard to shout the N-word and other racial slurs at her after the attack.

Cato, 27, suffered a broken leg and several internal injuries from the incident and spent months in rehabilitation.

Cosby was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of a hate crime. He was earlier convicted of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and battery evidencing prejudice. He had faced up to 35 years in prison.

Hats off to the criminal justice system in this case!

Fangoria Frightfest- Final Overview

We watched them, we cringed, and in the end, we shake our heads at Fangoria and their half-baked Frightfest.

It's a shame really, as Fangoria is the Holy Grail of horror print and happenings and has been for over 3 decades, and they seem to have picked some very lackluster films to slap their name on and promote. A few were good, a few were decent, but the majority of the Frightfest films were sub par and forgettable.

The verdict(s):

Fragile: B+
Grimm Love- B

Hunger- C
Dark House- C
Roadkill- D
Pig Hunt- D
The Tomb- Do Not Want.
The Haunting- Did not watch.

We didn't even watch The Haunting. We tried, but by the time we sat down to give it a go, all of our patience had been drained by the other movies we had to endure, and we turned it off about 20 minutes in and called it a day. It could rock, it could suck... we don't know, and right now, we don't care. That sounds shitty of us, but man, Fango really took the wind out of our collective sails with the FFF, and we are just finished.

If Fangoria does another round of the Frightfest in the future- which is bound to happen- we can only hope that they pick a group of better films than this one was, because frankly Tony Timpone and his crew is better than this.

Succes 2010: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr

Robert Francis Kennedy, Jr. is the third of eleven children born to Ethel Skakel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy and is the nephew of John F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy. He is an attorney specializing in environmental law and was co-host of Ring of Fire on the Air America Radio network.

In a January 2007 interview in O, The Oprah Magazine, Kennedy hinted that he might run for the position of United States Senator from New York, if Hillary Clinton were to win the 2008 Presidential election. The Senate seat formerly held by Clinton is the same seat to which RFK Jr.'s father Robert F. Kennedy was elected in 1964. Kennedy announced on December 2, 2008, however, that he was not interested in taking Clinton's seat

President's Weekly Address: The End of Combat Operations in Iraq

With the end of combat operations in Iraq days ahead, the President salutes our troops for their service and pledges to fulfill America’s commitment to them as veterans. 90,000 troops have left Iraq since the President came into office, and by the end of next year even the troops taking part in the non-combat mission will be home.

The administration is upholding the sacred trust with our veterans by building a 21st century VA, making it easier for veterans with PTSD to receive the benefits they need, funding and implementing a Post-9/11 GI Bill, and devoting new resources to job training and placement to help those veterans looking for work in a tough economy.

I understand that President Obama will be speaking to the nation on Tuesday evening. What are your thoughts about the way he handled the Iraq War?

Taser Autopsy: Denver Coroner Rules 'Homicide' in Taser-Related Killing of Marvin Booker

The Denver Coroner has ruled that the July 9 death of an inmate at the new jail was the result of HOMICIDE.

Marvin Booker was being processed on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia when he got into a scuffle with jail deputies. He was killed with a Taser gun shot at him by unidentified prison guards while being held to the floor.

Other inmates said Booker, 56, was then carried to the holding cell and dropped face first. He never recovered.

The coroner's finding means simply that another human being caused Booker's death instead of natural causes, suicide or an accident. It is not the coroner's role to determine who might have caused the death, or whether the homicide was justifiable.

The coroner ruled Booker's death was caused by "cardiorespiratory arrest during physical restraint." The coroner said deputies had their body weight on Booker's back continuously for four minutes while he was face down and put him in a "sleeper hold" for more than two minutes while shocking him with a Taser for 8 seconds.

An investigation is ongoing into the actions of the jail deputies who scuffled with Booker. Five deputies were placed on paid administrative leave.

Inmates who witnessed the event said Booker was trying to retrieve his shoes a short distance away when a jail deputy ordered him to immediately go to the holding cell. When he refused and tried to explain, he pushed the deputy and then was held down as several others dove on top of him, according to the witnesses.

A video captured the struggle, but has not been released while the investigation is underway. The coroner's report describes what is on the video, which confirms the inmates' accounts of the homicide.

"When he turned to return to the holding area for his shoes, the booking officer called him towards and isolation cell, and when he failed to come to her, she went to the holding area and placed her arms on his. He swung his arms to shake her off," the coroner's report says.

"The booking deputy was joined by three other officers who forced the decedent first to a chair, and then face down on the floor. Two officers struggled to cuff his hands behind his back; another tried to control his legs; a fourth lay across his upper back and applied a carotid "sleeper" hold around his neck.

"The decedent continued to resist, and the officer applying the neck hold requested a Taser. A fifth officer applied the Taser to his leg and discharged it for 8 seconds. The decedent ceased resisting shortly after the use of the Taser."
The sleeper hold was applied to him for two minutes and 30 seconds, but deputies said it was released intermittently to check whether Booker was still resisting.

After Booker was placed face down in the holding cell, a deputy remained on his back for another 90 seconds to two minutes.

A short time later, another deputy saw he was not breathing and began CPR.

Folks in Denver know that this man was done wrong. The powers-that-be know it as well. They are holding onto their videotape evidence of the electrocution in much the same way that Los Angeles Police Department never wanted the public to see the Rodney King video.

I sense that one or more of the five jailhouse deputies who killed Marvin Booker will be charged with a crime. What say u?

Taser Death: Eduardo Hernandez-Lopez (Las Vegas, NV)

The Nevada Highway Patrol are painting this as a case of 'road rage' gone wrong. Of course, we aren't able to ask 21-year old Eduardo Hernandez-Lopez what happened because he was electrocuted with at least 50,000 volts of electricity from the taser gun of an unidentified Nevada Highway Patrol trooper on Wednesday, August 25. [SOURCE]

According to the Nevada Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred more than two hours after a truck hauling sulfuric acid spilled the chemical and closed portions of U.S. 95 in both directions. Hernandez-Lopez got involved in a dispute with others during the hours of waiting for movement on the highway.

When officers arrived, they had a physical altercation with Hernandez-Lopez, whom they described as an "irate individual." During the altercation the man was shot by an unidentified trooper with a Taser, and troopers later noticed he was not breathing. These taser guns are 'stopping the breathing' of people on a weekly basis.

He was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where he was pronounced dead yesterday evening at 7:30 p.m.

It should be interesting to see how this taser-related death story rolls out over the coming days and weeks.

Soulclap to Sojourner's Place for pointing this story out to us over on Facebook. I encourage other villagers to let us know about updates on this story ... or about other taser-related deaths.

Taser Death: Michael Ford (Livonia, MI)

Michael Ford,50, has been on life support since police used a taser on him back on August 14. He died on August 26 when his family consented to having him removed from life support.

Here is the story according to the Livonia Police department [SOURCE]:

According to the issued statement, police were called to the 20000 block of Purlingbrook on a report of a disturbance about 11 p.m. Aug. 13. A man was playing loud music from his vehicle and nearly struck another car.  An unidentified officer spoke to an intoxicated man, identified as Ford, who was told to go back into his apartment because the complainant was not located.

About two hours later, at 1 a.m. Aug. 14, Livonia Police were called again to the same place on another report of loud music in the parking lot.

"This time he was holding what appeared to be two knives, one in each hand, he was yelling and approaching the scout car. The officer retreated and awaited a back-up officer. When that officer arrived they approached Mr. Ford and ordered him to the ground as they had reason to believe he may still be armed," the police statement said.

When Ford refused to comply, an unidentified Livonia officer deployed the Taser. Ford fell and hit his head, police said.
Ford's cousin Ewayne Harrell said Ford had more injuries than falling and hitting his head after being jolted by a taser gun.

"(The police) beat him up. He had a ruptured spleen, a cracked pelvis and cracks in the front and back of his head. I don't see how you can get all that from a Taser," he said.
Harrell also disputed police statements made Tuesday, saying Ford did not have a knife and "was not on drugs."

An investigator's report is being reviewed and independently investigated by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. The unidentified officer who electrocuted Mr. Ford is on desk duty until the investigation is complete.

Death Row Inmate Troy Davis Fails to Prove Innocence

Soulclap to NAACP Wichita Branch for sharing breaking news about a death penalty case that this blog has been tracking over the past couple of years.

Judge William T. Moore ruled that Troy Davis did not "clearly establish" his innocence. Because of the ruling, the State of Georgia will make plans to carry out the death sentence and set a new execution date.

The June evidentiary hearing was not a new trial, Troy Davis had no presumption of innocence and was limited in what able to be presented. And while he was still able to produce four witnesses who testified under oath that they lied at Troy's trial and yet others implicated the alternative suspect, he was unable to meet the very high standard set to prove his innocence.

Troy Davis's legal team has stated that they plan to appeal the ruling.

Oldies but goldies: Boy George

Boy George (born George Alan O'Dowd on 14 June 1961) is a British singer-songwriter who was part of the English New Romantic movement which emerged in the early 1980s. His 1990s and 2000s-era solo music has glam influences such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop. He also founded and was lead singer of Jesus Loves You during the period 1989–1992. Being involved in many activities (among them songwriting, DJing, writing books, designing clothes and photography), he has released fewer music recordings in the last decade.

Shirley Sherrod Declines USDA Job Offer (VIDEO)

The Shirley Sherrod story took another turn today. Villagers recall that Mrs. Sherrod was forced to resign in July after edited misleading video footage of a speech she gave was posted on the Internet.

This blog joined with many others in asking President Obama to reinstate Mrs. Sherrod to her position. However, Sherrod decided that she was not going to come back to the Obama administration on a full time basis. She will be accepting work as an outside consultant with the US Department of Agriculture.

She explains to CNN's Tony Harris why she declined the positions offered by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in the following video:

Does anyone know if there was any consequence to Andrew Briebert for his deceitful blog post on Mrs. Sherrod that created the shytstorm in the first place?

Good News Tuesday: Yusuph Mkangara -- Future Face of Technology

BDPA Columbus chapter made a major push with their Student IT Education & Scholarship (SITES) program this year. The leadership team worked with corporate sponsors, volunteers, educators and students to train dozens of students throughout the year. The effort culminated in the selection of a team of young people to participate in the 2010 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Championships held in Philadelphia PA.

One of the members of the Columbus national team was Yusuph Mkangara. Yusuph shares his thoughts on the experience:

This was my first year doing the competition at a National level. It was actually my first year doing any competition at a National level. I wouldn’t say I was nervous, but I was certainly anxious to experience it for the first time. From the first day of the competition, it was hectic; trying to make sure I didn’t forget anything that I learned from Columbus.

Columbus did exceptionally well this year at Philadelphia compared to previous years. I hope to be able to help Columbus make it to the top 5, if not the number 1 team, as I have 3 more years to experience the computer competition.

There were multiple speakers there who changed how I thought about a career in IT. One of the things I am always contemplating is what should I endeavor in, once I am attending college. Medicine is definitely the number 1 option. Some of the speakers though did show that I can incorporate IT into medicine.
All in all, I have definitely been exposed to the world of IT. Whereas before, I simply knew it existed, after the competition, I have taken it into more of a consideration as I make a career and life plans; thanks to BDPA and the HSCC.

The chapter needs support as it prepares to improve its performance next year. I hope that villagers will consider making a secure online donation to support Yusuph and his teammates!

Succes 2010: Finn E. Kydland, Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics

Succes 2010: Robert Thirsk, primul astronaut care a scris si publicat un articol in timp ce se afla pe orbita

Robert Brent "Bob" Thirsk is a Canadian engineer and physician, and a CSA astronaut. He holds the Canadian records for the longest space flight (187 days 20 hours) and the most time spent in space (204 days 18 hours).
On June 20, 1996, Thirsk flew aboard space shuttle mission STS-78 (the life and microgravity Spacelab mission) as a payload specialist. During this 17-day flight aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, he and his six crew mates performed 43 experiments devoted to the study of life and materials science. Most of these experiments were conducted within the pressurized Spacelab laboratory module situated in the orbiter’s payload bay. The life science experiments investigated changes in plants, animals and humans under spaceflight conditions. The materials science experiments examined protein crystallization, fluid dynamics and high-temperature solidification of multi-phase materials in microgravity.

While on STS-78, Thirsk wrote two columns for the Calgary Sun newspaper. This was the first occasion in which an astronaut wrote and filed a story to a newspaper—and had it published—while the astronaut was still in orbit.
During the ISS 20/21 flight, he was visited by two other Canadians: Julie Payette (Space Shuttle Endeavour STS 127) and space tourist Guy Laliberté on Soyuz TMA-16 at the end of September 2009. The meeting between Thirsk and Payette in July 2009 was the first time two Canadians met in space.[6] He and the Soyuz TMA-15 crew returned to earth December 1, 2009.

Can a Muslim American Become President of the United States?

The first 43 presidents of our country have been white male. The first 4,000 members of the House of Representatives were non-Muslim. To my knowledge, we've only had one practicing Muslim in congress.

So Colin Powell's question caused me to do a double-take. Colin Powell asked, 'Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? ... Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim American kid believing that he or she could be president?' during his endorsement of Barack Obama.

If a 20-year old Muslim American soldier, Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, can die for our country ... it seems we should have no issue with the idea of a Muslim American being our nation's president. Khan died in Iraq and his mother is shown grieving over his headstone in Arlington Cemetery.

If there are aspiring Muslim Americans dreaming about being president ... they should note that it requires hard work. Barack Obama earned his opportunity for the presidency by doing well in school ... doing well in his marriage and as a father ... doing well in his chosen vocation.

Robert Kennedy thought it would take 40 years for a Black man to be president. I think it won't take a long for a woman to be president. Nor would I be surprised if Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) or some other Muslim American were to be a credible national candidate in my lifetime.

63 years in a row, from 1921 thru 1984, we had white women winning the crown as 'Miss America'. That changed in 1984 when we had two Black women holding that title -- Vanessa Williams and Suzette Charles.

The 'Vanessa Williams Effect' got busy at that point. We have had five more women of color crowned as Miss America -- Debbye Turner (1990), Marjorie Vincent (1991), Kimberly Aiken (1994), Angela Baraquio (2001) and Erika Harold (2003).

Perhaps the 'Vanessa Williams Effect' will trump the 'Bradley Effect' as other non-white males strive to become President of the United States.

If so, a small amount of the credit goes to Colin Powell and Kareem Khan.

FFF- Dark House (2010)

The Plot: A little girl who witnesses a mass murder of other kids grows up to be an acting student and finds herself being drawn back to the scene of the slaughter... all for the sake of acting school. Once her improve troop arrives at the creepy mansion, the evil ghost of the child killer starts dispatching everyone in site, using computers. That all really happens.

This movie could have been kick-ass, but as it is, it's more along the lines of "not bad." Dark House definitely fills the gore quota, is mildly witty and fairly entertaining, but in the end it felt a bit too cheesy to fully enjoy.

So the evil spirit of the child murderess possesses the computer of the people setting up in the house... fine. The fact that every few minutes the film cuts to a scene of her spinning around or vibrating wildly in some sort of cyberspace (for lack of a better term) was not fine, it was really out of place and killed any hopes for mood that the film had.

Jeffrey Combs was fun as he always is, but his wit and quirky deliver wasn't enough to make the movie truly humorous, and it tried too hard to be amusing that it never really felt like much of a creep-fest. I'm not a fan of confused or middle of the road type movies, and this one felt like both.

It's very possible that it's just me, and this type of horror flick just isn't what I like; I can admit that personal preference doesn't always jibe with the quality of something, but while it didn't suck, Dark House just didn't do much for me.

C

While Dark House is not the movie for me, you may just like this one.

FFF- Pig Hunt (2010)

The Plot: A guy takes his city friends on a hunting trip to the backwoods farm where he grew up, only to find that they are the hunted! Clever, huh? There's also something about a hillbilly gang that grows weed, and an odd black dude that has a harem of naked whores running around the woods, and also a freakishly large pig.

Scrolling through the user reviews on IMDB, one would think that this is a masterpiece of low budget horror... until you realize that most people that comment about flicks like this on IMDB are shills, and they like to lie.

This movie sucked. Plain and simple. As if the premise about a killer pig isn't lame enough, the fact that they didn't even show the titular beast until there were only about 10 minutes left in the movie was a serious slap in the face. (At least when they did finally show it, there was no CGI to be found, the filmmakers using old school methods to bring the massive sow to life. That was cool.)

I can imagine that some people will like this movie, claiming it to be a bloody, funny, grindhouse-like piece of scholck gold, but I'm not buying it. The story is not only hollow and MORE THAN FAMILIAR, but it starts out as a backwoods monster thing, switches gear to an angry hillbilly thing, segues into becoming a Russ Meyer whore-fest cult movie, and then with 8 minutes left, the movie is about a killer pig.

I will give this movie 2 things: 1, Les Claypool of Primus did the music, and he's all kinds of cool. 2, There's a pretty awesome scene with about 10 naked sluts towards the end, rubbing and kissing each other. That was neat.

Other than that though, it's been done many times before, and far better. This movie is definitely not for me, but some of you may like it. That thought makes me sad.

D

Another clunker. I have to wonder why Fangoria selected some of these films for their signature DVD line.

Taser Death: Stanley Jackson (Washtenaw County, MI)

It happened again. This time 31-year old Stanley Jackson was tasered-to-death by a Washtenaw County Sheriff deputy for resisting arrest. I'm not aware that the death penalty is authorized for resisting arrest. However, the police seem to feel perfectly within their procedural rights to serve as executioner whenever they feel disrespected.

The extra-judicial electrocution occurred on Friday, August 20, when officers claim that Jackson didn't comply with their orders. One of the officers zapped Jackson with 50,000 volts of electricity thru a taser gun. The police say Jackson was still vocal and active right after being tasered.

"The deployment of the Taser was a direct response to the behavior of the subject," Washentaw Sheriff Clayton said.
Jackson was dead within the next two hours. Something went wrong ... and it seems that the taser may have been the cause of his death. Doctors spent 40 minutes trying to revive him. [SOURCE]

Jackson leaves behind numerous family members, including four children, ages 3 months to 12 years.

It should be interesting to see what the coroner announces as the cause of death. Jackson was a former high school running back with no known medical problems ... so it seems that the fail-safe excuse of "excited delirium" won't fit in this case.

Several deputies were placed on paid administrative leave.

Please let this blog know if you learn of any additional information regarding this taser-related killing.

FFF- Fragile (2005/2010)

The Plot
: Ally McBeal is a nurse now, and her skinny ass is still causing all kinds of hi-jinks and hilarity, and getting herself (and everyone else around her) into all sorts of wacky mischief... only this time it's with a bunch of sick kids, so it's not as amusing. Then again, Ally McBeal was never really amusing to begin with.... Anywho, there's a vengeful spirit lurking on the 2nd floor of this creepy children's hospital, and by vengeful I mean it breaks the bones of the already sick kids for laughs. Enter Ally McBeal as the children's only hope?

Having seen all 8 of the movies now, we can honestly say that this is the best the Fangoria Frightfest has to offer. I expected nothing from this one, seeing as it stars Calista Flockhart and has been sitting on the shelf for the better part of 5 years, but I was eating crow about 30 minutes into watching it, and spitting out the feathers for the duration. This movie does a really good job of setting the mood and the creeping you the hell out with the story. It's not the scariest thing ever, but it's effective.

Jaume Balaguero (the guy who directed [REC], [REC 2], and another creepy fave of ours, Darkness) also lensed this one and it all makes sense to me now... all of the aforementioned films have the same dirty, demonic feel to them, and manage to suck you into their worlds and keep you shitting kittens until the end. The guy has a deft touch when it comes to nuance and making things creepy. We are big fans of you Jaume (however you pronounce your name), and we can't wait to see what you'll do next.

If you love haunted house flicks, then this one should satisfy you on most levels. Even though it's more of a haunted hospital flick, really. Still. You know what I mean.

B+

This is the tops of the Fangoria Frightfest; if you only see one of the 8 movies (not to die for) then make it this one.

FFF- Grimm Love (2006/2010)

Finally, one of the Fangoria Frightfest films delivers the goods...

The Plot: Keri Russell plays an Emo-ish (borderline Goth-ish) grad student who is writing a thesis on the subject of gay cannibals. She's all mopey and has a dark side that shines through now and then, which sends her on a mission to find out the truth about a gay German serial killer... what she finds instead is a bunch of creepy Germans who have a fetish that involves eating each other (and not usually in the pleasant way.)

This is one of those slow pot boiler movies that feels tainted from the get go, and gradually gets more morbid the further into it you get. By the time the last scenes of the movie arrive, you're most likely going to be cringing and saying "What in the hell is wrong with people?" This movie tackles two difficult and uncomfortable subject matters in cannibalism and gay sex... if you have a problem watching either on screen, you may want to skip this one as there is plenty of suggestive and visceral images of both on screen throughout.

Is it a love story? In a way. It's more a story about some lonely, mentally scarred people finding each other while at the same time finally finding a purpose on their creepy common ground. Either that, or it's a story about some fucked up German serial killer who was the first to exploit and use the internet as a tool for his craft. Either way it's interesting, and even better than that, it's a really dark and creepy movie.

There's a particularly spooky email exchange towards the end which really drove the creepy meter through the roof, and finally gave Keri Russell what she wanted... and more. Dun, dun, dun! But seriously, it was pretty eerie, reminding us of the basement scene from Zodiac; you never know who is where, and why or how they are there, only that they are there and lurking there to give you a message or scare. (I have no idea what I just wrote.)

Subtle, eerie, uncomfortable and just downright spooky, Grimm Love delivers the creepy goods. (I know I just used eerie, spooky and creepy in the same sentence, which is really redundant and sloppy grammar, but it needed to be done!) I was very surprised that this movie has basically sat on the shelf since 2006 and couldn't find any kind of release. It's a flick worth seeing.

A solid entry to the Frightfest, I can only hope this is a sign of things to come with 4 movies left to watch...

FFF- Hunger (2010)

The Plot: Some dweeb who ate his mother as a kid abducts a bunch of people, dumps them down a well, and starves them until they feel like eating each other... it's a cathartic exercise for an insane mind. That's what I'm guessing. I'm pretty sure that this was the script originally intended for Saw XVII, but it was so bold and brilliant the the filmmakers just had to let it stand on their own.... The stripper, the hot final girl chick, the bland hero guy that everyone cant help but love, the street savvy loose cannon and the timid and scared geek... all whom are at the mercy of Kenny Rogers' gimpy looking son!

This one had some merit to it, especially with as bloody as it got in the later going, but in the end it just wasn't my thing. Too many flash backs for my taste, and most involved the "bad guy" whom I didn't give one shit to know more about. For the record, the bad guy/killer of the movie looked about as threatening as Kenny Rogers, beard and all, and every time they cut to him, he was making odd faces or adjusting a button or something... I just didn't buy into his menace.

The whole "several strangers who are connected to each other somehow find themselves trapped in some inescapable place together as part of a game/experiment" thing has worn out its welcome with me as well. Too many low budget horror flicks have tried to walk the line that the Saw films have drawn in the sand since 2004, but most just tend to be cheaper and less engaging shadows of said series, rather than bold, fresh new takes on a clever story.

The movie is not without merit however, especially as everything got a little bloody and nasty in the third reel, and the ending was fairly satisfying, which was a nice change of pace. Aside from the "mental games" aspect of the movie, some of the action was fun and definitely messy, so it has its appeal.

Overall, I think that a lot of horror peeps will really like this movie, while I am more inclined to call it decent if far from perfect. Of the three we've seen so far, this is the Fangoria Frightfest movie to rent... if you're feeling brave and don't mind taking a risk that you may be as underwhelmed but it as I was.

Alright, after two clunkers we get a fairly decent movie from the thus far underwhelming Fangoria Frightfest thing, which still needs to get way better to avoid sucking...

Taser Autopsy: Coroner Lists Death of Michael Ford as 'Accidental'

The Oakland County Medical Examiner completed their autopsy of 50-year old Michael Ford. Villagers may recall that Ford was taken off life support earlier this week after a confrontation with Livonia Police Department that resulted in a taser gun being used on him. After being tased ... Ford violently hit his head on the ground. The coroner says that the cause of death was the blunt force head injury ... an accident ... not the use of the taser. [SOURCE]

Livonia Police Deputy Chief Curtis Caid jumped all over the coroner's decision to put distance between the actions of his officers and the death:

We extend our sympathies to the Ford family for their loss,” he said, but “claims that police used extensive force are proven to be inaccurate by the results of the autopsy, by the medical records and the hospital.”
He said Ford was not beaten as has been alleged by family members, and that if Ford had listened to police, the incident would have been a non-event.

Police said Ford was electrocuted with a taser gun when he approached a police cruiser. They said he ignored commands to drop to the ground and believed he had knives in each hand.

At this point we have no independent confirmation that any weapons were found on Ford ... much less "knives in each hand". The unidentifed officer who killed Ford is currently on desk duty.

Vervena Johnson, a friend of Ford’s, said he was a special person and not at all like he’s been portrayed.

He was one of the sweetest, nicest people you could meet,” she said.

Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria

I shared information on my sister's book, Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria a few years ago.   It is a children's book that share the true story of Martha Ann Ricks, an ex-slave who spent fifty years saving spare coins to fulfill her dream of meeting the Queen of England.

Kyra Hicks (shown in above photo) is a world-class expert on African American quilts and quilters.   I'm pleased to see that a review of her book is now available on video:

Click here to see the book on Amazon.

Personally, I can't even sew a button back on my shirt ... however, I suspect that the villagers reading this blog post are much more creative.   Have any of you practiced the art of quilting?  or painting?  or anything else in the artistic realm of our village?

FFF- Roadkill (2010)

The Plot: Two couples find themselves at odds with a demonic road train on the desolate highways of the outback! Stranded and broken, they must try to back the evil truck down a road of risk eternal doom! Really. They spend the last half of the movie backing up... or attempting to. Add in a subplot about a guy with a whore girlfriend who sleeps with his best mate, and all of the tension it causes between the main characters, and you'll spend 85 minutes trying to back away from your TV.

First off, we really loved the concept of this movie; a driver-less truck that is most likely related to hell in some way, running not on fuel but on corpses, trying to fuel it's insatiable appetite... that's some fun stuff right there. It reminded me of Duel or The Hearse or something, with a bit of Joyride 2 thrown in for good measure, although the fairest comparison would be to say it is a lot like Road Games in feel and setting. (If you haven't seen Road Games, it's an oldie but goodie, and you should check it out.) Whichever one it reminds you most of, it's a "mysterious vehicle terrorizes innocent travelers for no apparent reason" flick in any case. Sometimes that concept works, sometimes it doesn't. Take a guess how it worked here.

The movie delivered some tense scenes, and managed to entertain well enough, some of the time, but something about it just never clicked into place as it should have. The acting was pretty good, the chicks were hot, there was some neat-o violence thrown in here and there... it had some merit. Where it lost its footing was in the sense department; not much of the movie made much sense, nothing was explained, and the characters were blisteringly stupid.

When a road train is bearing down on you at high speed, pull over. If you don't pull over, and it hits you, pull off the road when it does. If you let it hit and pass you, and then race to catch up to it, cut it off and flip the driver the middle finger, then you deserve whatever happens next. Why can no one ever be sensible in these movies? You're in a small suv and a guy in a massive, double-length semi truck hits you and nearly runs you off of the road, and you say "screw that guy, let's get him!" What the hell could you possibly do to him? That's nothing more than a dumb fucking person begging for tons of trouble. Call the cops. Pull over and let him drive off. Wish death on his family quietly to yourself... but try to fight a road train?

And let's discuss how after stealing a massive semi truck and fleeing from your life from a mad gunman, you not only manage to doze off while driving, but while you're sleeping you manage to turn off of the highway onto a dirt road, navigate your way down a narrow, winding incline, none the less and end up miles off course? While asleep! Wow. I guess you could write it off as "the truck willed it", and it drove itself somewhere, but they never explain it that way, and instead it comes off as a random happening. Again, wow.

Most of the movie after that is spent trying to back the truck up and get off of that road, although there's another place to turn around and escape that they eventually use... it's just really clumsy. Back up... stop, get out, wonder what's happening, get back in, back up 10 feet, stop, get out... fuck you.

And what's with the guy drinking his own piss after being out in the sun for hardly any time at all? What was she drinking from those cans? What was with all of the Cerebus imagery? Did anyone on the film crew realize that they got the direction they came from all screwed up? Why would you dump out 1 of your 3 bottles of water because you're all angry and throwing a tantrum?

It didn't suck as much as The Tomb did, but Roadkill was definitely a wreck none the less.

D

That's strike two for the Fango Frightfest, and quite frankly I'm baffled as to how bad these movies are so far...

Succes 2010: Patrick Vieira (Manchester City)

Succes 2010: Roberto Mancini (Manchester City)

Succes 2010: Roberto Mancini (Inter Milano)

Succes 2010: David Platt, fost international englez. Actual antrenor al echipei Manchester City

David Andrew Platt is a retired English footballer, who played as a midfielder. David Platt began his career as an apprentice at Manchester United F.C.. Platt later moved to Crewe Alexandra F.C. where he began building a reputation as a goal scoring midfield player. In 1988, aged 22, he signed for Aston Villa where he continued his scoring rates. In 1989 he gained the attention of Sir Bobby Robson, the then England manager and made his debut. At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Platt increased his continental reputation by scoring goals with both head and feet, whilst displaying passing abilities and high work rates. His performances in Italy earned him a move to Bari in 1991. His goal scoring abilities in the frugal and defensive Italian league. In 1992 he moved to Juventus, where he spent one season. In 1993, he moved to Sampdoria where he stayed for two seasons before returning to England with Arsenal, taking the total amount of money spent on his transfer fees, to £20 million. Platt played with the London club for three years before his retirement in 1998. Platt continued scoring goals for England, playing in Euro 92 and 96. Despite his efforts, England failed to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Afterwards, he returned to England as player-manager of Nottingham Forest. After expensive signings and failure on the field, he was sacked. Platt also served as manager of Sampdoria before leaving his post owing to poor results. Platt also managed the England Under-21 team. He is currently serving on Manchester City's coaching staff as first team coach.
Platt was given his first England cap by Bobby Robson in a friendly against Italy in 1989, and was then included in the England squad when Robson named his 22 players for the 1990 World Cup.

Platt was on the bench for all of England's group games, but was sent on as an extra time substitute in the second round game against Belgium. He responded by scoring a memorable volley on the turn in the very last minute of extra time—his first goal for his country, and also the latest goal up until then (excluding deciding penalties) in World Cup history - sending England into the quarter finals.
On 1 July 2010, Platt was hired as first team coach at Manchester City, a decision that was not well received by many City fans because of his well documented anti-City stance as a pundit.

Succes 2010: Kolo Touré (Manchester City)

Kolo Habib Touré is an Ivorian professional footballer who currently plays for Premier League club Manchester City and is the current club vice-captain, and also plays internationally for the Ivorian national team. After he successfully passed a medical in Manchester on 29 July 2009, Touré signed a four-year contract with the club of which has the option of extending by a further five years. City, who finished 10th the previous season, had made a number high-profile signings in preparation for the 2009–10 season, and Touré hoped to help make City a top four team. He was appointed the club captain by former manager, Mark Hughes. He scored his first goal for Manchester City in a 2–1 League Cup win over Fulham on 23 September 2009. He scored his first league goal for City against Burnley on 7 November 2009. Manchester City finished the season in fifth position losing out to Tottenham Hotspur F.C. by just three points. On 2 July 2010 Kolo Touré was joined by his brother Yaya at Manchester City following a transfer believed to be worth around £24 million.

Dr. Laura Quits Her Syndicated Radio Show

Dr. Laura Schlessinger couldn't stand the pain. She told Larry King that she was going to give up her syndicated radio show.

I 'spose that she figured out that using the N-word 2.5 times per minute on your show ain't a good thing to do. Personally, I think that any radio personality who is that racially insensitive shouldn't be on the radio in the first place. Good riddance!

FFF- The Tomb (2010)

The Plot: Some hot chick named Ligeia is running around a college trying to suck souls out of corpses with a tube, and she decides to seduce Wes Bentley and steal him away from his fiance because he's rich and he can fund her soul sucking. He falls under her spell, dumps Michael Madsen's daughter, moves to Russia or some place that looks like Russia with her, and they sit around in a castle and drink odd concoctions together, and brood. Ligeia needs a new body you see, because she's cursed and will die without "transferring her essence" to another. Plot holes galore and awkward body swapping ensue.

Anyone remember after American Beauty when Wes Bentley was the hottest thing in Hollywood, and thought to be on the verge of greatness? Neither do I. If he ever was on that sacred verge, then I honestly think that his eyebrows held him back. I mean, try taking him seriously as an actor with those eyebrows. Come on, Wes.

So imagine my surprise to find him starring in The Tomb (aka Ligeia.) I immediately thought to myself "this isn't going to be good", and lo-and-behold, it wasn't. It's a fine film in a few ways; it looks good, it's filled with some great scenery, there are a couple of hot chicks in it... and that's it. That's pretty much all of the "good."

Aside from those few things, The Tomb is drab, dull, boring, slow, often feels choppy, and above all, it isn't scary. As a TV drama, maybe it works for some people. Maybe. As a horror film, and one released under the Fangoria banner, it's a major let down. Let's not even mention that Ligeia was originally a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, because that makes the insult that much worse. Whoever wrote this script must have wiped their ass with Poe's short story and scoffed, thinking that they could do it better. There's no build or logical progression to many of the characters actions, they just seem to kind of do things because the script said to. I'm sure we're supposed to write it all off to Ligeia being so bewitching, but realism would still be nice.

There is no dread or feeling of foreboding to be found here, only poor plotting, poor pacing, and nonsense. I never once felt a sense of concern for anyone on screen, as there was no creepy or dangerous atmosphere anywhere to be found anywhere in this movie. I'm convinced that The Tomb was edited by someone who was drunk off their ass or wanted some kind of revenge, because the movie jumps scenes so awkwardly and nonsensically, that the plot becomes pointless and frustrating about 20 minutes in. Flat, uninspired acting doesn't help either when dealing with a shitty script, and that's pretty much what we got from jsut about everyone in this work of art.

Wes Bentley pretty much sleepwalks through this movie. Seeing Michael Madsen and Eric Roberts in this movie makes me recall the days when they were both character acting powerhouses, landing plum roles and knocking it out of the park every time. Here, they just kind of exist for the sake of existing, and serve no purpose. Sofya Skya is gorgeous as Ligeia, but really can't act to save her life; Monica Belluci would have been perfect in her role. It's always fun to see long time character actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, as he just has that thing about him... like a Japanese version of Danny Trejo, if that makes any sense. And Christa Campbell was in this? Where? I must have missed her when I dozed off...

No tension, no dread, little blood, poor writing, horrible editing, disjointed plot... even the sex scenes fell short, and the movie is about a seductive temptress!

This one brings nothing to the table.

So far, not so good, Fangoria.
