*Today might be the single most glorious DVD release date of the year.
Tuesday's always make us giddy. Why? Because there is nothing better than finally being able to get your mits on a DVD that kicks ass, that's why. On the flip side of that coin though, nothing sucks worse than grabbing a DVD and have it end up sucking. Taste and preference aside, we're here to help you avoid the crappy ones, so that you can revel in the dark glory that is good horror.
So let's take a look at what you should be buying or renting this week...
Trick 'r Treat- (Check out our review here.) If you love Halloween, this is a movie you must own. Period. T'rT is to Halloween as A Christmas Story is to Christmas (except that TNT couldn't run an all day marathon of this movie without editing it all to hell), and is required watching for the creepiest month of the year. I'd grab the Blu-Ray if you can; it has all sorts of special features and deleted scenes where as the DVD has very little. Still it's all about the movie, so just get your hands on it and enjoy.
4 Ghosthouse Underground releases- Sold together or individually, this is a pretty cool bunch o' flicks. One of the years best, The Children (review here) is a must see/buy; The Thaw (review on the way) is a creepy, willies-inducing movie that's worth a look see; Offspring (review also on the way) is the new Jack Ketchum movie, so you know it will be well written and disturbing; and Seventh Moon is a REALLY mixed bag. Check the review here to see what we mean.
Audition- 10th Anniversary Edition (review here) is a must own DVD. One of Takashi Miike's best films, it's also one of the most disturbing you're likely to see. The Gate- Monstrous Special Edition, on the other hand, is a cheesy little piece of 80's goodness that is way more fun than it is scary. Having grown up with that one, it's a must buy for me, but a lot of you may want to give it a rent first. Remember, it's cheesy 80's goodness!
Rounding out the week, I'd recommend seeing Thomas Jane in Dark Country, and the remake of It's Alive (review here.) Both are good flicks that are worth a spin in your DVD player.
That's it for this week's notables on DVD. Support the genre and go buy or rent these flicks. WE are the lifeblood that keeps the horror heartbeat pulsing, and don't ever forget it! Just go enjoy some good movies, would ya?
