This year at the Sundance Film Festival, horror was represented by some pretty interesting flicks, so I thought I'd take a minute to expound on them. You know, spread the word as it were.
Some great genre flicks have made the rounds at Sundance including Red, Dead Snow, Grace, and Moon amongst others, so maybe this year we may get a gem or two out of it if we're lucky.
Let's take a peek.
7 Days: In this Canadian film, a doctor seeks revenge by kidnapping, torturing and killing the man who murdered his young daughter. OK, this could be fun. Havent heard much about it, but I'd be willing to give it a go.
Buried: An American contractor working in Iraq awakes to find that he's buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone, it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap. Ryan Reynolds locked in a box for 90 minutes... I have no idea how the hell that could work, but the buzz on this screams of people loving the movie. Aside from him marrying my lover (Scarlett, baby, you'll always be mine), I'm all for Ryan Reynolds. I'm all in on this one.
Frozen: The director of Hatchet brings us the tale of three skiers who are mistakenly stranded on a chairlift and forced to make life-or-death choices that prove more perilous than staying put and freezing to death. Another movie garnering raves at every turn, and with a premise that sounds... kinda hard to do anything with. I'll see it Friday when it hits theaters, and I can't wait. The trailer alone sold me on this one.
The Perfect Host: A criminal on the run cons his way into the wrong dinner party where the host is anything but ordinary. Know nothing about this one, so I will withhold comment.
Splice: From the director of Cube comes a movie about two brilliant and ambitious scientists. The new animal species they engineered has made them rebel superstars of the scientific world. In secret, they introduce human DNA into the experiment. I've been dying to see this one for the better part of a year now, and the buzz out of Sundance is pretty solid. Someone needs to pick this one up for distribution, and now!
Tucker and Dale Versus Evil: Tyler Labine (Reaper) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly) stars in this horror-comedy as one of a pair of West Virginian hillbillies who go on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin, only to be mistaken for killers by a group of slasher-ready college kids camping nearby. I've heard less than encouraging things about this one, so I;m not exactly waiting with bated breath to see it. You never know though, it could be fun.
The Violent Kind: The Butcher Brothers (The Hamiltons, April Fool's Day) return to helm this story of a group of rowdy young bikers who party it up at a secluded farmhouse when, tormented by a mysterious force, things take a turn for the worst. This one seems to be getting some good and bad buzz, in equal amounts. April Fool's Day sucked, so I'm not sure what to expect from the directors on this one, but I'm willing to give it a fair shake. Especially since we use pictures from the movie on our side panel, because they truly look awesome. We shall have to wait and see.
